Training vertical branch as a central lead: magnolia tree

Last summer, the center lead died off...

This tree could go without the central lead, but I really wanted this tree to have an upright shape. 

I thought maybe there is a way to train this tree to have central lead, and voila! I found this picture from the website and decided to give it a try.
